His impulsiveness, his sadness, his pain, dealing with unrequited love, his humor as a defense mechanism; it’s some of the hardest things about being “human” and feeling. Damon is always being drowned in it despite how much he tries to turn it off. He’s got layers, shows his true colors, and he’s imperfect. He’s relatable and tragically realistic. THAT is the reason why I love his character.”
I don't know who wrote it on youtube, but that's why Damon is my favorite character ever! Along with Dean Winchester, of course.

Plus he is a very protective big brother.
Darker ones are far more interesting, that's why I was enjoying the Ripper arc.

Date: 2012-02-20 07:03 pm (UTC)I see Damon mainly as a brother. What ever Stefan does, Damon is always going to be in his blood. And vise versa. They need each other. And nothing they do will ever change that. They are opposites and the only thing they clearly have in common is that love (or what they think is love) makes them do things.
The ripper arc had so much potential, but I think they ar ending it. With Stefan being off the blood again. I guess they didn't want to go all the way with it. When Klaus described the Stefan he knew it seemed to be a lot worse than what they showed us.

Date: 2012-02-21 09:57 am (UTC)I agree that Damon is a brother who does everything for his brother, but Damon is also a person who does everything for love. Love drives his life and his decisions. I guess it's because he needs to be loved since he didn't get enough when he was human. It's like he tries to fill the hole that was left in his human life. This, along with his vampire nature, makes him intense and multi-layered.
I know the ripper arc is gone and I am disappointed they didn't go further with it. It would have been awesome to see.

Date: 2012-02-23 03:44 pm (UTC)I LOVE the fact that Damon is an absolute fool for love. He doens't do anything a little, but just jumps in with his eyes closed. And I think he expects that from others. Elena can't give that to him, neither could Katherine.
The ripper could have been so good. But I feel like they copped out.

Date: 2012-02-21 12:08 am (UTC)I think flawed characters are often so amazingly written precisely because of their imperfections, which make them so relatable and realistic. This is a bit beyond the scope of this conversation, but it is endlessly freaking annoying to me when fans say they ~love~ a character, but want to deny their flaws even when they are super evident in the scripts, because they for whatever reason can't love the character unless they're perfect.
So YESYESYES to that comment!!

Date: 2012-02-21 09:52 am (UTC)I agree, Damon might be perfect for me because he makes me feel things that other characters don't, but he does because is in not perfect. When a character is described as perfect or whatever he does is forgiven or forgotten it annoys me endlessly.
Damon pays for his actions. He doesn not have a free pass and is recognized he is able of both good and bad things.
So yep, his being flawed makes him perfect!
