This morning Internet loved me and I was able to watch it before leaving for the weekend. *pets the internet*
I have to say I wasn't expecting too much from this episode and the first 20 minutes almost confirmed it, but wow, guys, the second half was pure love!
Ok first let me do the shallow comment, so that I can come up with something serious and deeper after it.
This was the episode of Dean's close-ups! I couldn't even count them!
How much was he beautiful? Ok hot for sure, but beautiful is the right word to me because every time that Jensen plays angsty, twisted, frustated Dean, he is just beautiful.
Ok I'm done with this, let's move on the episode.
I liked how Sera Gamble handled the religious plot. This is something difficult to put on screen and she did an excellent job, setting up the angel storyline and how the boys dealt with it.
Gregory...awww I loved the guy. He was so screwed, thinking of doing God's will, deeply convinced to be an angel. I find interesting that people who really believe in God, often don't believe in supernatural or the Devil and people who do believe in the spn, don't believe in God. I think this is what the writers were trying to point out in this episode.
I cannot avoid to think about faith and how people react, according to their beliefs. Once again I saw a resemblance between SPN and X Files. Dean believes in spirits, just like Mulder did with the aliens, while Sam believes in them and in God, just like Scully did.
Only when it comes to God, Dean has to actually either see him or a sign to believe, like Mulder, while Sam and Scully have faith.
This might seem a contradiction, but it isn't to me...Dean just believes what he can see and he has always seen evil, in all his life.
This episode was a journey, for both the boys. They come to terms with what they want to believe and what they can actually see. They were both attracted and pushed away from the faith, for the same reason:fear.
Sam wanted so badly to believe in a good High Power, because maybe, it is the only one who can save him. He needs to believe that someone more powerful than the Demon, can help him to change what he thinks is his destiny.
He said it to Dean, he said he knew Dean is watching out for him and he is really grateful for this, but, somehow, he doesn't think it's enough.
I could rant on this but I won't because I understand how Sam feels and the fear, frustration and desperation he has inside.
I can't blame him at all.
Dean, on the other hand, he doesn't believe...or maybe he's spent years convincing himself it was better not to believe, to protect himself. He was so naive and so broken when he confessed to Sam why he didn't believe.
He was a child, his mother told him angels were there to protect them, then Mary was killed by a demon. It must have been very hard for Dean to believe again and, infact he didn't. He never had a reason to do it again.
His life was screwed, his father was a ghost hunter, all he had ever seen was spn evil creatures. Never, in his life he had the sensation that something good was out there. Never.
His eyes, his mind was like blind sided by what he had been trough and being a realistic, he just decided to believe in what he could see.
But I'm pretty sure he built up a facade, not facing his inner demons and trying to protect himself from any other disappointment. How could he have react to his father's death if again he had thought that God left his family alone?
He said that having faith makes things easier, I think he is right to some extent, because people who get faith are able to deal with things with something more, another kind of strenght.
But I think Dean was trying to avoid to face it because for him it would be even harder to accept what happened to his family knowing that God is out there.
Why, if HE exists, does He let happen all those horrible things to his family? So better cutting God off. This would be easier.
Considering this, his behavior is pretty normal. So I don't see him making fun of Sam. When Sam told him he uses to pray, Dean simply dropped the subject.
Another thing I loved about this episode was the brotherly bond. Dean was so worried when he saw Sam limp on the floor and he said it again "Sammy are you ok?". I've so missed those words. Then he never left his brother's side and opened up to him.I loved how they talked and what they shared.
Then Dean taking care of the guy, telling Sam he wasn't going to kill anyone. Dean, the big brother, the one who has to watch out for Sammy. He'll do everything to prevent Sam from killing anyone, but I'm not sure killing is the only thing
that can corrupt Sam. Hard task for Dean. So again Dean decided that if there is someone that had to be killed, he would have been the one to take care of it.
How far will he go for his little brother?
The last scene, the end of the journey. Sam faced the truth and Dean questioned his beliefs. They both are messed up and scared, both alone, fighting something bigger than everything else.
I saw the pain and the resignation in their eyes, but I also saw the awareness that they can count only on each other for surviving, to go on.
Dean found something new, not a real faith yet, but something in which believing in, something that can help him, but that will cause him sufference first. These boys are so alone.
My only question is: Dean didn't see a real sign, he just read the guy's death like a sign of God's will, while Sam actually saw something.
We know it wasn't God, so I wonder why did this spirit appear to Sam? Because he wanted to use his faith? Because the Demon wanted to destroy it?
The result is that Sam still has faith, but has to admit that he hasn't seen God and Dean, who hasn't seen him either, is now starting to have faith.
I love this show!
So again, a great episode. Different from the others, but I totally loved it.
