I agree, Damon ultimately felt responsible for letting Stefan go instead of interrupting him. I think the show's hinted that Damon shadowed Stefan for the years that he was off the wagon.
I don't really like the explanation of how Damon gave up being ... well, a martyr for love. Seriously, Sage says a couple of sentences and changes his whole persona? Doesn't really make sense, unless she actually compelled him. She might have been able to, being 900 years old to his 50 at the time.
