I usually don't read and don't like what Carina Mackenzie says, but on Damon being unselfish towards Elena, she's spot on:
“When Stefan and Damon have their post-game chat in the woods, Damon ignores a call from Elena. Klaus has gotten to him, and he’s realizing the trouble he could potentially bring to Elena’s life. I can hear all those ‘shipper hearts breaking, but I actually think that Damon distancing himself from Elena, even for a brief time, shows how much he loves her. Of course, she might not feel that way when he starts getting his kicks elsewhere, but for now, it’s very unselfish of him.”

-Stefan is trying Elena out. He's testing her feelings...at this point it's pretty clear that Elena trusts Damon, while she doesn't trust Stefan at all. I get his reaction, but I am not sure he has the right to be all judgy. He is the one who made the decision to give up on Elena and his life when it was not necessary at all.
-Caroline, don't trust Meredith please.
-So now Caroline's dad might turn into a vampire too. Talking about law of retaliation...
-"makes you look all villan-y"....eheheh Damon look !
-Damon/Stefan scene, while Stefan got dressed:
1.Stefan is such a child sometimes. He acts like he has no part in what it's happening. He was the one to trust Elijah in the first place (I agree, he is kinda warning Damon not to make his same mistake), but he should drop the "I'm better than You" attitude. He always does that. When he feels and when he doesn't. It's part of who Stefan is, but I won't ever like it.
2.Damon is wrong. The kiss would have happened eventually, because Damon/Elena has always been about the build-up of a strong bond. With Stefan around, it would have been more difficult, but it would have happened. I am sorry Damon hasn't realized it yet. Anyway playing that card with Stefan was smart. Damon still knows which buttons have to be pushed with his brother.
3.I say it again, the moment Stefan said it was Damon's problem to take care of Elena he lost every right on her. That being said, his reaction is so typical and predictable it's not even worth to be deeply discussed.
-I don't think Meredith is the killer, I think they want everyone to believe it.
-I just love Klaus demeanor. I love how he is able to speak the most terrible words with elegance and savoir-faire.
-The dinner scene dialogue was brilliant imo. They are not hiding, they are all aware that they can't trust each other. Btw I think that at the end of the day it will always be The Salvatores vs The Originals.
-I love Caroline/Elena friendship. Somehow it keeps them safe and grounded. They are just two young women who have to fight against something that is so much bigger than them. I loved loved loved that Matt arrived to comfort Caroline. He is such an amazing friend.
-Tatia was the one who came between Klaus and Elijah...sounds a lot like Elena, don't you think? Everything The Originals said about her and their bond, can be easily applied to Damon and Stefan. Family above all. The Salvatores have showed that it's the same for them gazillions time, but they are not able to say it out loud...yet.
-*cuddles Bonnie*...she is so strong, she can deal with pretty much everything.
-Coffin unlocked!
-Gotta say, Klaus is right. As it was Isobel. Damon and Stefan are not going to make Elena's life easy, neither can Klaus. He will protect her only because he needs her. There would be no normal and happy life for her with Klaus. Elena deserves to be free and to make her own choices. Even if it includes to love a vampire.
-Ric, again.
-Sadly Elena, it's right. She is not entirely human. Btw, has not the ring showed some issues lately?

-oh wow, Finn, Kol, Rebekah! I don't think they are really going to kill Klaus, especially when they find out the truth about their mother...but I do think Klaus is not going to have a easy life.
-For now, Damon's plan worked.
-Matt and Elena are not meant to be. They can be friends, but nothing more than this.
-Damon and Stefan in the woods: I HATE THAT PHONE RINGING. WORST TIME EVER! I loved that scene. It wasn't much about what Damon said, but about his body language when Stefan told him that he could have left him there, dying. IMO Stefan was testing Damon too and Damon is not comfortable in opening up about his feelings for Stefan. Once again they have proved each other that their bond is the most important thing for them. So I don't think Stefan really believes that Damon could have left him there, I do think he wanted to hear from his brother that he couldn't. Stefan is really getting back to his usual self...I have the feeling that somehow he wanted to be reassured that he is still worth to be saved and to be loved. Hence his questionable behaviour. I might be wrong and Stefan could just be his selfish, whiny, martyr self, but I think this time things are different.
-Damon didn't pick up the phone...awwwww...and Elena did call him again....
-"I love her Damon"..."so do I"... but since Damon is unselfish when he loves, he might actaully distance himself from Elena, just to keep her safe. Exactly like Klaus said. Not so sure about Stefan's intentions.

-I feel sorry for Klaus. I mean he is horrible and he is cruel and he has done the worst things just for his own purpose...but when I look at him, I just see a rejected child who just wanted to be loved and accepted for who he was and never was...not even by his own mother. Speaking of whom...welcome to Mystic Falls, Mama Original.
-Can I say how much I love this ORIGINALS storyline. This, entwined with the Salvatores and the doppelganger ones, is going to make this show EPIC!

Bonnie and her mom, Caroline loosing her dad, somebody killing people, the originals. A lot more important things to deal with.
THis episode was just so much of what I love about stories. The fact that no matter what your family does, it is nearly impossible to walk away from them. It felt so family centric and all about brothers and jalousy.

Date: 2012-02-03 07:48 pm (UTC)Of course, just skimming the comments here makes me doubly glad that I'm not involved in the fandom. All the Delena v Stelena stuff makes me nauseous. I like Elena by herself, and I'm more interested in the relationship between the Salvatore brothers than their respective love for Elena. Though it seems to me that Elena should be feeling the same as Katherine did, in that she loves them both. It no longer makes sense or even works that she only chooses Stefan at this point.
And WTH, Stefan? I did not expect the writers to turn 180-degrees back to the whole jealous Stefan who's desperately in love with Elena routine - not after everything he's done this year, to include being seemingly fine with tasking Damon with Elena's care. Give me a break. They'd been doing a really good job showing us Stefan's spiral and underlying true nature - far superior to the terrible job Kripke and Co. did with Sam's. But they took a misstep, IMO, with Stefan being all stupidly jealous of the kiss between Elena and Damon.
If there's a chance this triangle is going to get super annoying, frankly, I'd rather Elena learn what it is to be an independent woman on her own without the need of any man. And seeing as Klaus is correct that any offspring Elena produces would be fodder for supernatural interests, if I were her, I'd choose here and now to remain childless.
I'm disappointed that Meredith isn't the villain who is going after the counsel members. How many times has poor Alaric died at this point? ;) I take it this is a new Big Bad we haven't seen yet? Caroline's father's choice to die rather than turn was very sad, but a little heroic too. I only wish the writers had given us one solid meaningful scene between the two ex-spouses before he passed, rather than having the mother lingering off on the sidelines.
So we get rid of one Original parental unit just to bring in another? I think it would have been far more interesting to have all the Originals together again, including Mikael, attempting to make a life as a family in Mystic Falls.
I enjoyed the episode, even though it sounds like I had a lot of nits - which I guess I did. Still, the story line in general is keeping me hooked.

This!!!! Stefan chose to abdicate all responsibility for Elena as a boyfriend and a friend. He really needs to knock it off with the attitude. But I love how Damon’s handling it. He’s showing remarkable maturity and really showing that he IS the big brother and cares about his little brother. Heh, it makes me think of Damon’s mocking of Jeremy’s attitude back in “Founder’s Day” and how teenagers have so many emotions and don’t know how to express them well often times. Damon’s certainly had a lot of practice with his forever seventeen year old brother!

I was thinking the same thing! Damon had to feed Ric his blood last time he was ‘killed’ since the ring brought him back but didn’t heal him.
This makes me wonder whether or not Ric was fully healed this time. We don’t actually know cause it cut from him waking up to Damon and Stefan finding Bonnie and her mom unconscious in the caves. I have a feeling this thing with the ring and Ric is building up to something, but what I have no idea. There’s a possibility it might have to do with Ric having copious amounts of Klaus’ blood in his system when he possessed him. They’ve made a point of vampire blood having fairly powerful healing properties, and Klaus’ in particular is unique as it can cure a werewolf bite. But what kind of effect does what, about two pints or more, of hybrid blood have on a human with a magic ring? I find it odd they never addressed that considering the focus shot on the blood bags and the IV running into Ric’s arm. So, maybe?

Yep, I’m betting Damon’s going to distance himself, probably try to go back to his guardian like position from Season 2 and not be able to do it. He really does love Elena so much!
The promo suggests Elena isn’t happy with either Salvatore brother though. Honestly, I don’t blame them for being uber protective when it comes to the Original family and Elena being around them.

EXACTLY! And that is partly why I'm fine with D/E not being any closer to being together than they are at this point because Damon doesn't get just how bad Elena DOES have it for him.

Loved her in this episode; I just wish that we had more time to care about Abby or even the Bonnie/Abby relationship to feel more overall for this story arc.

Damon & Stefan's relationship is so screwed up, but it's nice to see some progression between them (although it's also a big obstacle for Damon/Elena). They really do seem determined to not let their love of the same girl destroy them like it did with Katherine. ITA that Damon will distance himself from Elena because he feels it's in her best interest. I do not believe that Stefan is capable of such a self-sacrificing gesture.
Stefan's 'better than you' attitude and his predictable reactions are getting very irksome to me, as well. I hope the show starts bringing out some of his positive traits soon.
It really is amazing how Klaus can go from being the big bad to a rejected child and make it all believable.
