Good morning flist!
How are you?
I am ok. Still excited after the con.
As you all know, Jensen won the TV Guide Poll as Favorite Actor (2011). I am not surprised. His fanbase is pretty passionate and dedicated.
Here's an article that praises him (thanks Lee): Jensen Ackles Wins TV Guide Poll: Favorite Actor (2011)
From Ben and Alec in Dark Angel to his turn in Smallville as Jason, to Dean Winchester, the character he was born to play, Jensen has grown into an artist worthy of his craft. I’ve called Mr. Ackles an artist before in this blog and it’s a term that I honestly believe he’s entitled to. Ever since his character of Ben (Dark Angel), the disturbed, tortured, violent, and psychologically irreparable X5, Jensen has been diligently applying his special brew of technique to his acting. Is it Method, Meisner, or Classical? It must be a mixture. He’s vehemently aware of his fellow actors, his blocking and his props. He seems to live his character, but only when the camera rolls and perhaps a few minutes after. There have been stories of a worked up Mr. Ackles after stressful scenes, but he uses his passion to his advantage. Mr. Ackles is also acutely aware of the physicality of his characters. All of his characters are approached differently, from the tilt of his head, to the speed of his reactions, to the timber of his voice.
When I look back at Mr. Ackles’ acting in the Pilot and the earlier episodes, I see a Dean Winchester who has been locked away for most of his life. He’s shredded his innocence and has surrendered himself to his father’s ideals of hunting. Most of his social skills are feigned. He pretends to fit into a society when the need calls for it, but fails miserably at times. That is what I see in Dean Winchester, his reactions shouldn’t be normal, far from it. Dean has been with his father while Sam was away at Stanford. That must have been draining and disturbing. Instead of reacting with fear or surprise, Dean had a tendency to react with intent, with the knowledge of a hunter and the desperate need to take down the supernatural. Mr. Ackles has always reacted in character.
About Jensen in Season 6:
Season six has been different in my opinion. Ackles' acting has been more refined, boarding on technique deserving of a stage. His awareness has grown horrifyingly precise, understanding the script and his surroundings to a science. Mr. Ackels also seems to be over extending himself, by finding the nuances in the writing and using the lighting blocking, and camera angles to his advantage. Jensen Ackles is the soul of Supernatural. He’s been holding the pieces of an experimental season together. The actor has had to balance out the characters of SoulLessSam, Castiel and his secretive actions, and the dour Campbells. The actor has had to weave together an inundation of plot points from a twisted fantasy vampire episode, to being the voice of reason between Castiel and SoulLessSam, to becoming an intrepid detective. Dean Winchester has been the show’s beating heart for most of season six. The Campbells were lying, Sam wasn’t really Sam, and Bobby didn’t know about the Campbells or Sam. Castiel has been occupied with greater issues. In season six Dean has been the only character with a clean heart, and a clear mind, devoid of any treachery.
Overwhelming, enchanting, and perhaps underestimated, Jensen has been a pleasure to watch this season.
Read the whole article. I agree with every single word.
