JENSEN, *thud*

Paley 2011 Announcement. he Supernatural panel will be on Sunday, March 13, 2011. Check it out for the tickets :)
I loved the first Paley with SPN!!!
Under the cut, an interesting comment to latest Paula article about Jensen acting in S6. I agree about Jensen and the characterization of robo!Sam. For me it was a big failure. I blame the writers for it. This comment adds something on Jared acting too. Not sure what to think about it.
Anyway, I warn you, don't read if you think that Jared and robo!Sam were awesome, because this person likes Jared, but didn't like robo!Sam characterization and Jared way to play him.
Thanks Lee for the heads up.
Feel free to disagree and discuss, but no WANK allowed :)))
...from what I know/understand, the part about Dean not being Dean because of Sambot is a ‘safe’, non-controversial opinion. It has been repeated a few times, not only by Jensen.
The ‘controversial’ part was, I believe, Jensen stating (and Jared confirming it) that he’d had to put extra effort into keeping Dean Dean not because (or not only because) of lack of Sam but because of the way the character had been written (the infamous ‘soft Dean’). Sera’s Dean, in terms of characterisation and the dialogue (e.g. sentences are longer, less concise) is different. In writing. Jensen’s job has been to keep Dean recognisable while dealing with a completely different material. This is the toughest job imaginable because it puts a lot of responsibility on the actor’s talent, understanding of the character and ‘maturity’ as an artist. I’ve been doing film/theatre production all my life, I should know. I think he has been amazing. Jensen’s earned my respect.
I think that’s also the reason why Sambot, for me, has been such a failure. Padalecki is a decent actor, but Sambot has been all over the place. Of course, it’s mostly in the writing. But, again my opinion (and I like Padalecki, to be clear), Jared failed to ‘construct’ Sam-without-his-soul as a character. He’s done everything scripts said, and that’s it. Most actors do, come better, some worse. That’s why I think, what Ackles has done with Dean is absolutely exceptional.
I’ve learnt recently that most ‘oh, the real Dean is back’ moments this season has been Ackles add-libbing. Giving whiskey to the shapeshifter baby, ‘second look’ at the lady’s breast in Veritas episode or “Fight the Faeries ” scene – these all belong to the actor, not the writers."

Date: 2011-01-20 08:45 am (UTC)I totally agree with Paula. Couldn't have put it better in words. I also like the fact that she is so careful in her words. I too like Jared, but I totally agree that his performance did not do anything for me. I have seen Jared act better with other material.
*switches to fangirl mode* I like the first part of your title. It is so true! I like the fact that ou put material in your post to prove the statement! *g*

Date: 2011-01-20 09:09 am (UTC)Also the whole 'we realize that family is at the core' thing which was so ingrained in the fabric of the show for the first three seasons has totally fallen apart with the constant angst between the main characters. The fact that for 2 and a half seasons the boys haven't had a great relationship, while realistic, doesn't suit the show in the long run. I know that here and there there are episodes that show that bond or at least try to, but it's not enough. I sometimes feel that I'm watching the Dean show, occasionally I'll be watching the Sam show with a tad sprinkle of odd Castiel in both shows. I remember when I used to watch the SamnDean show and loved every moment of it.
That's just my 2 cents...

Date: 2011-01-20 09:38 am (UTC)I hope to see something good, I am pretty sure I won't.
I want that show back, but I want it different. That's why I am enjoying so muchTVD, because ev erything is clear and simple, even if angsty.

Date: 2011-01-20 09:20 am (UTC)As for that comment you know i agree with that fan 100%. I'm not a fan of JP's acting but he can do good. He totally failed robosam though because he followed the script not thinking of continuity and that sam was all over the place from ep to ep.
I also agree that the reason Dean remained Dean in all this mess was only because of Jensen. He faught for his character and he tried his best to keep Dean IC no matter what sahit the writers gave him. That's real talent i must say.

Date: 2011-01-20 11:46 am (UTC)The writers didn't feel Sam this season and if they don't know the background, they can't give him a consistent charcterization.
It was hard for both of them, I just think Jensen did better with a less amazing material. I would be curious to see what Jensen would have come up to playing soulless!Dean.

Date: 2011-01-20 12:13 pm (UTC)That post pretty much sums up my thoughts on Dean and RoboSam this season. There were times that I thought Jared did a great job of having distinct persona's, but he didn't maintain it and as the commenter say, did exactly what the writers told him too. Through this whole season you have seen Jensen fighting to maintain who Dean fundamentally is. We are so privileged to have such a talented actor on a small time TV network show. It's always hard when you have a new writing team that really don't know the character well, but Dean has still been Dean to me this season. It's obvious that most of that is because of Jensen dedication to the role and his craft. Love this man to pieces.
I do think though, that Jared has come a long way in his acting from where he was in S1. He has a lot more depth and range now and I'm sure having had such talented actors around him has allowed him to make that growth. Though on the flip side of that, it will always be hard for him to shine for me while Jensen is acting beside him. I would dearly love to see Jensen given a great movie script with a great direct just so we could see just how far Jensen could knock it out of the park.
*hugs you*

Date: 2011-01-20 06:03 pm (UTC)Sorry, but I so disagree with the bottom response, I thought Jared did a good job with souless Sam, cause it's hard to be a human with no soul and be walking around.
Just my opinion...

Date: 2011-01-21 09:24 am (UTC)About Jared, yes we disagree. I didn't like the characterization at all because it din't work for me. So yeah maybe we agree on Jared and disagree on what the writers have done.
Feel free to express your opinion...you know I always welcome nice discussions :)
