I was thinking about my attitude towards fanfictions.
I have been mostly a lurker into the Buffy/Angel and the Battlestar Galactica ones, active in the Dark Angel fandom.
I have had a different attitude towards fanfictions. I totally read AU and preseries in DA, I was totally for canon in the others. I don't even know why...maybe because in DA I didn't have what I did want or maybe because I saw possibilities they decided not to explore.
With BSG, I mostly read canon and sometimes preseries fics. Maybe it's the only show that pretty much satisfied me with where they went. Yeah sure, I would have wanted another finale for my favorite characters, but it fitted and so...fanfictions fill the hole.
With SPN is not like this, even though I read ff (and I have read some very good altrnative verse which I enjoyed), I still think it's the show that has to give me the answers. I am totally canon with SPN and really, it amazes me how I am unable to enjoy AU or things that are too much different from canon. No matter how good is the writing. This bothers me because with the other fandom I didn't have this issue.

i read the fics that since supernatural. i fall in first for the rps and after the fics sam dean i enjoy really the things that we would like , the AU. i imagine often promts. dean been adopted ,kidnapped by mary and john baby to save sammy adult. cause dean come of family of witchs as charmed. his sisters are piper,phoebe,his bro chris and wyatt.when it know the truth it abandon the winchesters to be with his true family.

or dean don't understand that his parents loved sammy more that him it is hurted by maryn by john who had a other son , by sammy who abandonned him very often. when with god and cas they win god offer him a gift that it want. it choose that his parents come back with jessica for sammy. but cause of the suffer they abandon his family for the first time to live his life in working for god and it become very close of cas, meet an angel, fall love.

for dark angel i read a little of fic alec max together. i would like that in the show that max understand that with logan she haven't of future and see how alex is beautiful, sex ,funny ,that she fall crasy love of alex.

of you have fics alex max or alex love with others. the fns wrote alex logan fics?

that wanted you in the show after the season 2 for alec? i think that jensen would have lot of succees at the opposite of michael. jensen have more of charisma that michael the both together not easy. have jensen micheal in NCIS in the same character would be funny as tony.

I read Alec/max fics and it was not canon.

On SPN I have read AU fics, Crossovers and stuff like that, but it's canon I enjoy the most.

Some of the Supernatural fanfics writers teached me that if something is well written (and sometimes fanfics are magically and wonderfully written) is always worth reading!Why should I deprive myself of good things?I have no problems reading canon,non-canon,AU,etc...for the reasons I listed above!;D

I have a weird attitude toward fanfiction. Usually, it's not AUs or non-canon stories that I can't read, but stories that don't get the characterizations right. There's nothing that makes me hit the back button as fast as seeing someone do or say something that I feel is contrary to who the character is. So often this happens more for Dean's characterization, while I can accept or enjoy different characterizations for Sam. I guess this depends from the fact that it's so easy to get Dean wrong and go overboard with him considering the fine line he plays between being brass and loud and at the same time introspective and sensitive. Too many writers take Dean at face value (and yes, it happens with Sam too but in a way Sam being the 'straight' character it's easier not giving him lines or out of character attitudes) and I fear that the show has the same problem as well (see the out of character Dean in Fallen Idol for example).

But I agree with you on one thing: I want the main answers coming from the show because especially lately I see the fic stuck in a certain characterization of the boys that I don't share anymore and that I think the show challenged plently in season four.

I don't read fanfiction for show that satisfy me or for show I'm not fannish about, but then I watch so little television and I'm so boringly mono-fannish that I can't be used as comparison.

The only ones I keep reading are BSG. Some DA, but there aren't many new around.

The characterization is a big issue for me too. If they make a mistake with it, well everything is spoiled.

I started off reading fanfiction in the BTS and ATS fandoms..mainly gen and Buffy/Angel and also some slash. Someone on my flist was writing Angel/Wes and as I liked her writing I surprised myself and gave it a go.

Dark Angel really Gen as I don't ship Alec/Max.

Firefly/Serenity..Gen and Simon/Mal..I really have a thing for that pairing.

But nowadays all my reading is mainly SPN or SPN RPS and if it's written well most things I'll try..except Daddycest and underage Wincest. And I love Au especially Jared/Jensen ones.

Yes..want Dean now!

I read just about ANYTHING in all my fandoms, but love both canon and au in all of them.

I think I'm like that because I would run out of fics to damn quickly otherwise! LOL!

I never really got totally into BSG, have watch some of it but not all. I enjoyed it, just not riveted like my other shows. I love Doctor Who, Torchwood and have become very fond of Merlin! Haven't deleved into any of there fanfiction, well not much more than a fic or two here and there.

Other fandoms I read more thoroughly are Dark Angel, Smallville and some Stargate Atlantis. I haven't really delved into many others, but I like SPN cross overs with firefly (loved that show!), Buffy (especially love Dean/Buffy for some reason!)and Angel.

It does fascinate me what people will and won't read and how their tastes have changed over time and then what made them change. I'm noisy like that! LOL!

Mine are changed too...it's with SPN. I used to read pretty much everything, but with SPN it's different.

I am really careful about what I read. It's like ff spoil the show for me...dunno..

I suppose the AU's I pick to read a generally the ones that have the characterisation just right and so it's almost like reading an alternate reality of supernatural kind of like WIAWSNB the Djinn episode. When I think about it most of the stuff that I read that is AU is spin off from particular points in the storyline that I love and like to think of the other ways it could have gone or points in the story that I think just didn't quite sit just right and the AU's explore the possibilities a bit.

I think my like for AUs came from reading fic where Dean was permanently injuried in some way and both of them had to adapt to the changes. I think one of the first times I read AU was associated with an AU of Devil's Trap, where Dean had to recover naturally from his injuries and John still died, but the characterisation was so good that I could really see it happening that way. Maybe if it had of sucked I may not have gotten into AU's at all.

What was the first AU of SPN that you read like? Was it well written or crappy?

Just wondering if what we read first of a particular fic genre shapes if we like it or not. Would make for an interesting thesis one day. :D

There are few shows I'm interested in but SPN is really the only one where I read fic regularly. But I too have become very picky about what and who I read and for me it's mostly a characterization issue. I feel like a lot of ff writers and the show have gone in opposite directions with the boys so I rarely read any Sam/Dean or Sam and Dean anymore since most of those feel so OCC to me now. I'm still enjoying some of the more well-written Dean/Cas fic especially since the show isn't doing much with them these days.
