Whale sanctuary becomes law in Chile

SANTIAGO, Chile (AP) — Chile has turned all of its Pacific Ocean territorial waters into a whale sanctuary.

President Michelle Bachelet on Wednesday signed into law a measure that bans all whale hunting off Chile's 3,400-mile (5,500-kilometer) coast.

The law bans whale hunting both for commercial and scientific purposes.

Bachelet calls the law "a big step ahead in the protection of nature and a major legacy to future generartions."

Chile has not hunted whales for about three decades, but the government sought the law to emphasize its decision to protect whales in its waters.

Argentina, Brazil, Costa Rica, Mexico and Panama already ban whale hunting.

A whale sanctuary exists in Antarctica.

More.

New Zealand is with them as well, while Norway, Japan and Island keeps asking to re opene the hunt at laest for scientific purpose. This is so stupid. They don't need animals to sacrifice for their studies.
They still hunt for commercial purposes while has been demonstrated that the request for whales products keeps dcreasing.

Guess people are more intelligent than who wants to protect the interests of fews.

Sorry, I'm not happy with this policy.

On another note I would really slap President Sarkozy right now. He should know better than he and his wife do.
And for the record, I really don't like Carla Bruni and her "I'm better than you" attitude. She should remember who gave her success and money.

For my fellow Italians, I am talking about teh decision he made about former BR Petrella and what he implied with that decision.

On Corriere Della Sera, Claudio Magris explained it very well.

Pretty icon! Pretty. *pets your icon*

Also, yay for whales! I think it's wonderful that they're getting a break. I think the oceans are being overfished to begin with - its creatures need all the help they can get.

<i>She should remember who gave her success and money.</i>

Her parents gave her the money. Her whole family is <g<really</g> rich. From her mam side and for her dad side. They left Torino and went to live in Paris when Carla Bruni was a chil because they were worried about the Brigate Rosse.

Claudio Magris is a great man, great mind.

About the Whales I'm surprise about Norway and Island.

And talking about Island, like a month ago they were in a economy boom and yesterday the news said their money is like paper, no one wants the local money anymore, only $ and €. Crazy.

I deleted my former post, because I messed it up. Sorry.

Non preoccuparti...

oh e cmq Sarkozy ci ha praticamente detto che non siamo uno stato di diritto...la Francia e la sua grandeur proprio non la reggo....

e io non ho nessuna comprensione per le BR o i terrosristi in generale. Proprio nessuna.

Scientific studies my ass! Bastards!

Glad to see that others are taking a stance and outlawing it completely. Good on them.
