We don't know what Mary would have done. I am fairly sure she would have gone back into the hunters' life to avenge John's death. After all, she was the one that started it all. Yes, she probably would not have raised her kids like John, because she was not the soldier that John was and didn't have the militaristic background. John failed in many ways, but he did what he felt was best, and although we don't think he did right by his kids in many ways, he did what he could. And we can't completely judge until we walk a mile in his shoes. So, we will just agree to disagree on this matter.
