ITA with your opinion of Damon. He has grown so much and every single thing he did and said in this episode was just perfection. I was so proud of him for standing up for himself and letting Elena know that she had to accept him as he was or not at all and that she needed to figure this out for herself. He could have been a little nicer about it at Scary Mary's house, but that's not who he is.
That scene was an eye-opener for me. It showed me a reason for why Elena has not yet examined her feelings for Damon. Prior experience has taught Elena that generally Damon's actions will cause a strong reaction in her thereby giving her an out from having to actually make a decision. Given that she has been living in denial-ville for so long, this was exactly what wanted (although it's also her biggest fear with him) to keep up her delusions.
Ian's delivery of that epic line, "What if I didn't? What if there was no bump?" was stunningly awesome. His expression and the inflection of his voice that held hope in the midst of the hurt and frustration he was feeling ... GAH!!
I can understand how it must have hurt him that she seemed so bent on expecting the worst from him. Her default of waiting for him to screw up even after she's seen firsthand the good in him has to be taking a toll on him.
It will be very interesting to see what goes on in her mind, now that she's crossed the point of no return. I'm just so happy that she is no longer living in denial-ville and that whatever happens between them is based on an open, honest exchange and not on delusions and misconceived notions.
The scene in the motel room was just so powerful and beautiful and honest - all with very few words being spoken. It was wonderful to be able to see all of their feelings on their faces and to have their closeness back.

The scene at Scary Mary's needed to happen. This is just how Damon/Elena work. It will never be easy for them, they will always have glorious highs and fighting lows.
